As my profession is a community mental health nurse (CMHN), I will put light on a personal experience using Gibbs's reflective cycle. It occurred with one of my clients. I would highlight my learning and development which I gained through this experience. I would reflect upon this incident that how it made me more effective in achieving my preferred practice. I would describe my opinion, thinking and approach about the incident that occurred. It will also show the quality care I provided; the skills that I developed during my training and what I learned from the incident thereafter. To show how this incident developed and what I learned, I would demonstrate it through GIBBS model. It would guide my reflective process.
For the purpose of this assignment and patient confidentiality, I will call my patient Mr. Smith, in keeping with the Nursing and Midwifery Council's (NMC) guidelines, as stated in the 'Code of Conduct', which state that all nurses should maintain confidentiality. Reflection helps in professional development, which reveals knowledge and skills required in everyday practice and expose areas for further development. Reflection is a process of organised thinking. It analyses and evaluates the learning process, which develops skills with practice. Reflection significantly analyses practice to reveal fundamental influences, rationale and knowledge (Walsh, 2001, pp. 147-178).
Reflection
Reflection is a procedure within which the practitioner can consider about and attain a better knowledge of their practice (Taylor, 2000, pp. 17-56). It is one key way in which experts can think about and expand their own practice. There are diverse ways to reflect depending on individual practitioner predilection. In this assignment, I will demonstrate that I have achieved all the module learning outcomes. I will highlight my learning and development which I gained through this experience. I will reflect upon this incident and how it made me more effective in my practice. I will discuss my opinion, thinking and approach the incident that occurred. To show how this incident developed and what I learned, I will use GIBBS reflective model (1998) to structure the essay (Resuscitation, 2011, pp. 1-2).
Gibbs Reflective Model
Gibbs reflective cycle points out that infant have signalling actions that stimulate the care agent to act on their behalf to fulfil their needs. Nurses should not assume that the infant is totally helpless in expressing his needs, but should have an awareness of the infant's signalling actions. The responses to nursing interventions should be utilized to make care adjustment, teach other caregivers, and initiate advances in care (O'Shea, 2005,pp. 45-117).
A crucial part of reflective practice is learning from realistic professional experience. Practitioners can either remain only in obvious problem solving according to custom or under pressure of work, or rather engage with deeper level, potentially more meaningful and difficult inquiry. It might on the other hand be more appropriate for the busy and practical professional practitioner to aspire somewhere between these two extremes and however be actively involved in research and evidence based practice (NMC, 2008, ...
