Introduction

An important and very effective role is played by communication in our personal and professional life. in order to progress in our personal and professional life we should make sure that that we have leaned all the aspects important to effective communication. Usually we have always emphasized on written and verbal communication but we frequently fail to realize that there is another most important means of communication that is body language. Body language tells us about the way we write emails or speak. A lot of strong signals can be sent through body language than written text or words (McCroskey & Hickson, 2008). This paper has mainly focused on non verbal communication that is based on gestures and body language. I have answered some important questions related to gestures and body language which will effectively help the professionals working with disabled people as my personal relationships, professional relationships and career is in working with people with disability by helping them in their daily needs such as calming them down to handle repetitive questions, enhance their academic, money management skills and prepare them to be in community.

Question: One

The use of body language is affected by various factors such as age, gender, psyche, culture, and language. Research shows that there is body language difference between native speaker of English and native speaker of other language. For example a friend speaking Persian sit with crossed legs will mean something else to the friend speaking English, sitting with crossed legs means to show politeness in Persian culture while the sitting with crossed legs means dependency on other Americans (Sharifabad, 2011). I personally has also experience this situation. A Persian friends was standing with crossed arms which according to him was a gesture of politeness with the other friend who was a native American speaker took it wrong because in American culture it should a gesture of defensiveness. Thus in order to avoid communication breakdown and misunderstanding learners of EFL should take care of their body movements and gestures.

Various people who are not native speakers of English tend to learn English so that they can effectively communicate. In addition, Research shows that the used of body language in Women is high when compared to men. Women are more skilled at receiving and sending nonverbal messages as compared to men.
