Introduction

Georgia represents one of the most historically significant and culturally rich states in the United States of America. It is the largest state in the east of the Mississippi, and the youngest of the thirteen colonies. By 1860 this state consisted of the most amount of population among all the Southern States. The geographical and the economic value of this state has made it historically distinctive. However in the context of the US history, the state of Georgia has played a significant role in the socio- economic development of the country. For any historian, the history of Georgia holds a significant value not only in terms of the US history, but also crucial history that predates the US. The Native American culture has also formed deep roots with this state, where their culture dates back to the Paleo-Indian Period, up to 13,000 years ago. By 1860, it became to be known as the “Empire State of the South”, as it had become one of the biggest states in the south. The conflict of the civil war found its roots in the state of Georgia, as it was the largest slave holder and had the biggest stake in the southern secession movement. The Southern states wanted to preserve their interests and opted to enter one of the darkest moments of the United States history, by deciding to secede from the Union. As Georgia was in the forefront of the civil war it became the 5th state to secede from the union in 1861.

The History of Georgia in the US history highlights several momentous social movements of the time. The rich history of the state has observed the movements for social causes such as women's rights to the basic humanitarian rights for the African Americans. There are several literature works available on the rich history of Georgia, with “Georgia Odyssey” by James C. Cobb as one of the most insightful books on the socio- economic history of the state. I think that this book by Cobb has used the storyline of the main characters to highlight several significant historical events. I found this book to be both captivating and informative, and gave a fair reflection of the history of Georgia.
