George Orwell and Virginia Woolf

George Orwell wrote the essay “Why I Write” in 1946. This essay dwells on both autobiographical and political backgrounds. The essay is a self examination by Orwell in which he has elaborated on the reasons as to why he became a writer. Along with his own, he shares the reasons why other writers write their works. He has expressed sheer egoism as one of the reasons behind the writer's motivation to write. Egoism he explains causes a writer to be vengeful and self-centered in his writings. The writers in such case are motivated by an ideology that would help them exact revenge from those who have wronged them. Orwell indicated that the young writers are mostly prone to this form of writings.

Virginia Woolf wrote an essay entitled “Mr. Bennett and Mrs. Brown,” in 1923. This essay deals with the version that Woolf has to offer on the state of modern novel. Woolf attempts to offer an intrinsic explanation for the changes that need to be made in literature. The stress on this is emphasized through implying the change that human character has undergone in history.

There are a few similarities in both these writers. Both are British intellectualist and wrote mostly regarding the Spanish Civil War. As different as they stand on the issues of war, both have inherent ideas that are in contrast to each other regarding modern writing and literature.

Discussion

What is there to note the most while comparing and contrasting these two writers are their personal views which they have exhibited with regards to writing and literature. While George Orwell's thoughts include taking things mostly from the point of view of the males such as their egoism, Virginia Woolf dwells by focusing on the feelings and thoughts of women. However, this difference does not outline a major significance of their work. In fact, this difference is set to cover only minor portion of their works.

So what we have is that while Orwell goes on to offer an explanation of the motivations that writers are driven with in writing their works, that is the type of writings, on the other hand we have Woolf elucidating the change that novels have gone through with time (Roe & Sellers, 2000).
