Genocide around the World

Introduction

On a boarder view, the only similarity which exists between the individual of the current era, and those of the primitive times, is the fact that there seldom was a period which would have been lived peacefully and without bloodshed. Unfortunately, even after progressing so much, mankind has failed to keep away their differences and live unitedly and peacefully.

The word 'genocide' was coined in 1944 to name a particularly shocking and horrific crime of violence which it was then believed could never happen again. That it has been put into practice so many times in one century is even more shocking. The human race is the only species that can and does think itself into anger and violence. ('The more I thought about it, the angrier I got.') We ought to be able to think our way out of it too. ('Later I realised that violence didn't achieve anything.' (Harff & Gurr, pp 359 - 371)

One much-practised way of thinking one's way to violence is developing beliefs to back it up; some of them may head towards the absurd. 'Violence is the only way to get respect.' 'Violence is the only language they understand.' 'I'm good, you're evil,' 'We're peaceful, they're brutal.' 'I wasn't going to let them beat me.' 'They're ALL cheats/liars/scroungers/dirty.' 'If I took it lying down, I couldn't hold my head up again.' And so on. There may have been a time in the early history of the human race (a time when the natural world was the chief threat to survival) when this kind of primitive thinking served a purpose (Reyntjens, pp 177 - 210).

Brief History Of Genocides

Unfortunately, the current history of the world is written by sheer bloodshed and hatred. Over the years there have been numerous incidents of the genocide on mass level in the world. The detriments of the genocides are so extensive that a whole subject can be rendered just to accommodate the history in one place. However, the famous genocides of the world include, the genocide after the fall of Berlin, the Rwanda genocide, The Armenian Genocide, the mass genocide of Pakistanis (Muslims) after partition of India, Pakistan (after the war of 1971), genocide of native American and many more (Möller, p. 113).

Main Causes Of Genocide

Genocide never starts and never started without a purpose. Although, the overall circumstances, of every genocide, were rather different and distinct, yet the pivotal and the key causes revolve around some crucial factors. Factors such as the economical, as well as the political inequality towards a certain group, or numerous kinds of crises, such as the economic crises in a country or region, or the political downfall, as well as the past conflict or issues between different groups. Moreover, the prejudices, and stereo types, as well as the ethnic and cultural differences are also amongst the pivotal factors of causing the genocide.
