Introduction

The feminist movement is a social movement that calls for equal rights and dignity between men and women. In the course of its history, it has given rise to several different forms in practice and theoretical thought, which is why the term feminisms, in the plural, is generally preferred: there are socialist, psychoanalytic, liberal, third-world, postcolonial, multiracial, theological, libertarian, and other feminist currents. In this paper, the author will examine the extent to which the gender movements of the 1960s encompassed more than the rights of women (McElroy, 2002).
