Gender Income Inequality

Thesis Statement

Although great strides have been taken in the workplace to ensure the equality of men and women in this country, there is still a considerable discrepancy in the amount men and women get paid for doing the same job.

Introduction

Women received the right to vote almost 1000 years ago; however their struggle for equality has not yet ended. Today, in 2013, women only make $.77 to every man's $1.00. This difference cannot be attributed to different positions or titles. For doing the exact same job, women make a whole quarter less than a man. This figure is even grimmer for women of color. This is an important topic because many times, people do not realize that women get offered much less than men do when entering jobs that are exactly the same. Gender equality is often thought of as an issue of the past, but it should be acknowledged that there are still differences in how men and women are treated in America (Adshade, 2013). In this paper we will discuss the facts regarding income inequality on the basis of gender in America. Moreover, this paper will discuss the causes of income inequality on the basis of gender.

Discussion

There is still difference in earning of a man and a woman who are graduates of same institute and after one year of their education they work at the same place at same position. This difference is around 7%. There are many justifications and focus on the undefined proportion of income gap which is resulted from workplace discriminatory practices (Fair Labor Standards Act, 2013).

In 2012, the percentage of women in vulnerable employment, i.e. unpaid family workers and own-account workers, was 50% compared to 48% men. However, these differences are larger in North Africa (24%) and in the Middle East and sub-Saharan Africa (15%) (Felfe, 2012).

The indicator on segregation by economic sector shows that women have a more limited choice of employment. This form of segregation has increased over time, with women who leave agriculture in developing countries, or go from industry to services in industrialized countries (Adshade, 2013).

Causes of Income Gap based on Gender

Acceptance of Low Paid jobs among Women

Women are ready to accept the jobs that offer low wages. Therefore, organizations keep their salary low as compared to man. This mindset has led to the income disparity on the basis of gender (Tischler, 2005).

Family Management

One more reason of gender inequality in income is associated with the family. Children have both men and women, but in American culture the upbringing of children is the responsibility of the woman. Management of family and taking care of children are the main responsibilities due to which women deny the opportunity to work, while their male counterparts make good career success. This is why woman hold less senior positions than men (Felfe, 2012).

Less flexibility for Working at Office

The first factor of wage inequality is differences in working time. Women are five times more often in part-time than men: their income every time work ...
