Introduction

He was the political and spiritual leader of the Indian independence movement in the 20th Century, the 1947 non-violent resistance, and civil disobedience movement. He played a vital role in bringing an end to the British colonial rule in India. He was in South Africa previously against apartheid, in order to promote equal rights for the Indians. He was the leader of the movement who wanted India became independent. "Mahatma" Gandhi's honorific name means 'great soul'. His real name was Mohandas Karamchand. Gandhi was born in 1869 in the Indian province of Gujarat. After studying law in London, drew Gandhi as a lawyer in South Africa. There he met with the injustice of apartheid, the system that classifies people by race.

Gandhi spoke of his feelings and belief of opponents in order to change her mind and to win as friends and allies. He urged the human rights of untouchables, and women who aspired to the reconciliation between Hindus and Muslims and fought against the colonial exploitation of a new, self-sufficient, rural lifestyle marked by the economic system. He had to spend eight years in prison. His life ended with an assassination attempt. Even during his lifetime he was famous, for many. He was a role model for many people and it was acknowledged as he won Nobel Peace Prize Nomination several times. In his year of death, this Nobel prize was not awarded symbolically.

The main reason behind his popularity was his nonviolent stance against discrimination in South Africa and India make him and his resulting theory to one of the most important examples of humanity. He has inspired countless people, especially in the American civil rights including Martin Luther King. It is one of the darkest chapters in the history of the Nobel Peace Prize that the committee was not to award the Prize to Gandhi through his struggle.

Gandhi was seriously against the discrimination faced by people in not only in India, but also in America as minorities did not get their due rights and they struggled to live their lives without any problem. He represented a common man and his personality depicted it. As a result, he was very popular among different nations and people around the world.
