Gabrielle Roy was born in the year 1909 in St Boniface. She was the youngest of the eleven siblings. Her father was working as a federal settlement officer and he was the government agent responsible for helping the new immigrants in settling down when they came to West Canada. However, her father soon lost the job in 1913, just a few months before his retirement. This deprived the family of a possible source of income that they may have gotten from his pension. And the family was then supported by her mother, who was employed in the profession of sewing,

Forced to face extreme poverty, Roy in her later life would be motivated by her earlier plight to focus closely on the topic of poverty and the individual\'s struggle for existence. Most of her characters in her novels were faced with a dire economic situation in which they had top labor hard to ensure their existence.

Roy was a bright student who won many at school for her performance. She underwent training at the Winnipeg Normal Institute from where she earned her teaching certificate in the year 1929. She started her career as a teacher and taught in various small communities. She finally accepted a job at Académie Provencher.

Roy was motivated by a desire to study theater and this made her to move abroad to Europe in 1939 much to the annoyance of her mother. The move was made despite the fact that her mother depended on her for financial and emotional reasons. In Europe she stayed in France but soon moved to England to study theatre.
