Functionalism

Functionalism

Functionalism is a sociological theory that attempts to explain social phenomena the role played by institutions in society. If a particular social change promotes a harmonious balance, is considered functional if it breaks the balance, is dysfunctional, and if no effect is non-functional. Functionalism is not just restricted to the brains of human being; it also depends on the other non-human brain. So at the beginning aliens could have the same metal states just like human beings. (Lenski, 2006, 14)

There are flaws in functionalism as well just like the other theories.

Strengths: (Murner, 2005, 27)

It started with the surveillance that society is structured: relationships are formed in form of rule and regulations.

Stability and order is produced by value consensus.

It is believed that the basic needs should be met in accordance for the society to survive.

It considers the society as a system in which different parts are linked together.

Functionalism is the framework for building the theories that sees the society as a complex part whose different parts are working together to promote stability and solidarity

Weaknesses: (Murner, 2005, 27)

An analogy is drawn between society and organism

Functionalist believes if society is present just to fulfill needs and when these needs are met no change is required: that created problems in explaining social change.

It over-stresses the harmony that subsists in society.

In Functionalism metal events can rise with different structures and that does not require understanding this process to recognize the working of the different process.
