Introduction

Mary Shelley and her masterpiece Frankenstein has seen a lot of analysis and examination over the years by scholars and students alike, and its many themes have been explored in every context that the story boasts of. In this paper, I will be exploring the way in which Mary Shelley exposes human nature and desires and the struggle between progress in a person's desired profession, as well as the need for comfort and intimacy. She explores and expands on whether the two themes are in contrast to each other, and through the narration of the story, explains human nature as experienced through her characters and situations.

Discussion

One of the main themes that is repeated in the story is of isolation, and in its preface alone, the author tells the readers of how the following novel contains notions of a “domestic affection”. Many readers disregard this as the story in itself is centered around tragedy, despair and isolation, but familial tendencies are deeply seated at the heart of the book. The evil in Frankenstein is not directly exposed through Victor or the Monster, but through the ways in which isolation can affect a person and lead them to behave erratically. When Victor is seen to have become lost in his responsibilities and unaware of the consequences of his actions, he is bought back to the present through the act of vengeance on the Monsters part. The Monster itself is not evil per se, but is led to behave in a rash manner because he has been exposed too long to isolation, filling itself with hatred and accusatory questions as to why it needs to live away from society.
