Introduction

Frankenstein is a novel deals with science-fiction. It is written by Mary Shelley, and entails story of a creature that was produced as a result of a scientific experiment. It was first published in England, in the year 1818. The authors took three years to complete the novel. it revolves around the character of Victor Frankenstein who created this creature, during his scientific explorations. Novel has remained bestseller for years after 1818, and was highly acclaimed. The paper deals with detailed evaluation and critical reflection given by Jerrold Hogle who presents a detailed analysis and rationalize his analysis in all facets of the play.

Evaluation of the critic

The Critic chosen for Frankenstein is Jerrold E. Hogle. He has done his B.A from University of Irvine California, whereas pursued his MA and Doctorate from the Harvard University. The author presented his Doctorate dissertation on “the theory of the Novel in English, 1750-1815”. His areas of specialization include the romantic poetry and prose in English, literary theory and its criticism, 18th and 19th century British fiction, as well as, The Gothic. The author has served as teaching fellow in humanities, as well as, in English at the Harvard University. He further served as the associate professor, and the Director, as well as, the head advisor in English language at the University of Arizona. His publications include two books namely Shelley's process and the undergrounds of the Phantom of the Opera. He received many awards for his outstanding work and contribution to the English language in general, and literature in particular (Chao, 223).

Thesis of the article

The author begins with the idea that the creation of Frankenstein is a self-serving, malicious facet of science. It approaches the aspiration of science negatively, since he shows that science can create the evil that overpowers the mankind (Chao pp. 223-226). He says that the dominance of the creature created by Victor is on a quest against those people, who seek knowledge, wisdom and moral highness. He believes that both the dreams of victor present extremely complex context. As he wakes up from the first dream, and therefore, watches the second dream which reminds victor about his conversation with Walton about creating a creature through scientific experiment. However, the conscious dreams resembles to the concept of Psycho-analytic approach of unconscious dreams which advocates that people recognize their desires through dreams and unconscious minds. Besides, he believes that victor's attempt was in order to attain power and worldly supremacy, rather, than excel on fair basis. The author believes that it is a pro-feminist work of literature, since; the creature asks for a female companion and makes it his reason of happiness. The novel regards females as mandatory for the course of happiness. He also explains that the novel represents a phenomenon called 'Abjection'.
