FOOR ULCER IN DIABETES

The Incidence of Foot Ulcers in Patients with Diabetes Mellitus

The Incidence of Foot Ulcers in Patients with Diabetes Mellitus

Introduction

This research work focuses on identifying the incidents of foot ulcer in the patients who are exposed to diabetes mellitus and the prevalence of diabetes mellitus and diabetes mellitus type-2 (Boyle, 2008: 23). This study will also be discussing the problem and the factors of prevalence of diabetes type 2; it will also be emphasizing on aims and objectives of the study and further on it highlighting the methodological approach selected for the research paper.

The Problem

The diabetic foot is a long-term complication of diabetes. Different factors involved in the development of trophic disorders of the foot in diabetic patients. Ischemia is a common complication in diabetic patients. This is a circulatory failure in a part of the body. It is the result of diffuse stenosis and is mostly located distally (in the foot) (TAmerican Diabetes Association, 1999: 98)

Prevalence of Diabetes Mellitus

Diabetes Mellitus is mainly due to a state of insulin resistance and is associated with overweight. In later stage of life diabetes mellitus converts into diabetes type-2, in which the body of a person with diabetes mellitus is unable to maintain the levels of glucose in the blood and regulate blood sugar. In the long run, if blood glucose is lowered by treatment, it can cause serious health problems, such as cardiovascular problems. This chronic disease requires a personalize treatment and close monitoring by the individual and the medical team. Adopting a healthy lifestyle is the foundation of the treatment. If these habits are not enough to lower the blood sugar levels, medications can be used (Cavanagh & Lipsky, 2005: 12).

Research Aims and Objectives

The research has following aims and objectives to be achieved after the research:

To investigate the factors responsible for the current prevalence of diabetes mellitus

To focus on the literatures having elements about the incidence of Foot Ulcers in Patients with Diabetes Mellitus (Edmonds & Foster, 2006: 69).

Research Question

Based on the above mentioned aims and objectives of the study, this research work has following research question:

What are the factors responsible for the current prevalence of diabetes mellitus?

What are the incidences of Foot Ulcers in Patients with Diabetes Mellitus?

Methodology

Research methodology is an organized way to unravel a research problem (Kumar, 1999). The methodology that would be used for this research is 'Literature Review'. Hart (1998:13) defines literature review as “The selection of available documents (both published and unpublished) on the topic, which contain information, ideas, data and evidence written from a particular standpoint to fulfill certain aims and express certain views on the nature of the topic and how it is to be investigated, and the effective evaluation of these documents in relation to the research being proposed.” (Friedlyand, 2005: 136)

The research is based on secondary data collection. The data is extracted from various journals, articles and ...
