Introduction

Food safety is defined as the access of sufficient food by all people to lead a healthy life. According to USDA (2013), it has been estimated that the total number of food-insecure people in the world would be 707 million in 2013 which shows the food security situation is going to deteriorate further in the coming years. As per Iezzoni (2011), food safety has been affected by ethnic and cultural diversity and health disparities in the public health systems. The need for increasing the quality of life through healthy and safe food has become one of the most important agenda for the U.S. government. The main task of this study is to identify the causes of unhealthy food and assess the role of authorities in controlling, monitoring, and ensuring the quality of food served in franchised establishments and fast food chains. It has become highly imperative to improve the legislations and public health systems to ensure food safety while minimizing diversity and health disparities existing in the society.

Food safety has become one of the most crucial and alarming issues due to the increasing food insecurity around the world. The hazards of eating unhealthy food have brought serious implications for people. It is important to study and understand the need for food security in order gain an in-depth understanding regarding the research topic. It has become imperative to broaden the scope and explore various aspects of food security and take immediate measures. The study also aims to improve the role of U.S. State Health Department so that food insecurity can be monitored and controlled in an effective manner. It has become highly critical to create awareness among masses through educational programs so that food safety can be increased in the coming years.

Food Item and Hazards

The food item that I have chosen for safety review is the sandwich. There are a variety of sandwiches available in our workplace; there is difference in the meat and vegetables used. The four food safety hazards associated with this food item are as follows:
