Abstract

The folk rock music marks a paradigm in the genre of the music which has influenced the America in 1960's. It translated the emotions and the feeling of people in the era of Great Depression. The lyrics hold more significance than the music, although the melodies of some folk songs are very beautiful. This paper discusses the Folk Rock discusses the influences leading to its formation, musical characteristics and outstanding performers, and its impact on subsequent music.

Introduction

Folk rock can simply be defined as the combination of folk lyrics with rock instruments. It is the amalgamation of rock n roll and the folk music. It can be simplified as the protest songs to the beats and harmonies of rock n roll and was at the height of popularity in 1960's. It is a musical genre combining the element of the rock music with folk songs. Simply it can be referred as a typology of music that emerged in UK and USA, in the era of mid 1960s. This genre began by a band that belonged to Los Angeles called The Byrds who started playing lyrics of the folk music, traditional ballads and material of Bob Dylan with rock instruments that were greatly influenced by The Beatles and some other bands of Britain. The U.S. music press used this term first time to translate the music of The Byrds in June 1965. In the same the following month, the debut album of the The Byrds' was introduced. The success of the album “Mr. Tambourine Man” was the first constructive stone in the success and formation of the rock in mid-1960s. Dylan himself was greatly influenced by the genre as his recordings with electrical rock bands in Highway61 Revisited, and Blonde on Blonde albums marks his contribution in the formation of folk music. The appearance of Dylan on July 25, 1965 appearance at the New Folk Festival along with an electric band are also a set bench mark to evaluate the pivotal movement in the development and progression of the folk rock music.

Inspiration

The genre history begins from the past in the American folk Music Revival, the music of The Beatles, and some other British Invasion bands. On a mentionable note, the folk music influence is clear in songs like “I'm a loser” and you Got to Hide Your Love Away” in the Beatles' songs. Generally this music can be explained as the clear vocal, harmonies, and a distortion free approach to the electrical instruments as exemplified from the 12-string guitar harmonies of The Byrds.
