Flower Power was a slogan used by hippies in the 1960s and 1970. The flower was a symbol of their nonviolent ideology. The term was coined in the Summer of Love in 1967, in a rally in San Francisco during which the hippies were instructed to wear flowers in their hair and distribute around them. They became the "Flower Children" to the media.
It has since been used repeatedly in movies, songs and other documents relating to the hippie movement. In computing, the logo of ICQ is a flower that refers to a time when community life was in vogue. There is also a computer model Apple iMac G3 named "Flower Power" because of its white box with colorful flowers.
Discussion
The people of that time had a kind of culture which demonstrated a distinct style of living. In this culture, a separate music and clothing style was established. The graphic area it took had an effect on the poster art. Some men and women wore flowing robes batik with bright colors and mostly the so-called Jesus sandals on their feet. Spreads were also items such as incense, aroma candles, which are still popular in some areas of the country. Hippies adorned themselves as a sign of peace and love with flowers; an attribute that was soon recovered by the fashion industry and made it socially acceptable in the world. They were, therefore, of the tabloids called "flower children”. Men as well as women often wore long hair and jewelry. Free love and drug-free enjoyment was prevailed. The psychedelic music, besides folk music, was the dominant style during the height of the hippie movement in the late 1960s, which was marked by the drug benefit by many musicians (Bennett, 1967).
A well-known song that was directly on the origin of this culture and the flowers cover was the biggest hit, "San Francisco (Be Sure to Wear Flowers in Your Hair)" by Scott McKenzie, who was at number one on the chart for two months in 1967, in Germany. Predecessor was the song “All You Need Is Love" by the Beatles, which was also remarkable for the times and led the hit parade for six weeks. The Woodstock Festival had become a famous musical highlight that was launched at the same time at the beginning of the final phase of the hippie movement and was not commercialized. Actual representative of the hippie era was the Musical Hair, which was announced by the Age of Aquarius (Esoteric). Just "Hair" was and is used by the vast majority of the hippies to be too clichéd and cheesy looking.
Today, the hippie movement is still alive. It is existed since 1968 as the Europe's biggest hippie festival as Burg Herzberg Festival. More regional festivals such as the Flower power Festival in Freiberg or Freak Week No End in the Upper Palatinate is a wide selection of music of different directions, in accordance with the alternative culture (Stuart, 2007).
