Flags of Our Fathers

Describe the author, his techniques, his purpose and his achievement in writing this book?

Author James Bradley in his book “Flags of Our Fathers” has captured the legacy, the catastrophe, and the achievement of the six young brave men who raised the American flag at Iwo Jima. The main purpose of writing this book was that James after the death of his father in 1994 found a letter which his father had sent to his parents from Iwo Jima, and describing his feelings regarding the flag raising as "the happiest moment" (pg.01) of his life. Thus, Bradley decided to undertake the research that would give rise to this book. Single-minded to learn more with reference to his father's part in this extraordinary historic event, Bradley conducted a number of interviews and made use of extensive articles and primary source photographs to reveal the histories of these spirited and strong willed men and the truths of what they and their companions experienced in an atrocious battle on a small island miles and miles away from their rural regions in American. This book shows the variety that structures and composes the American experience for all the six individuals in what may be the most significant and fascinating picture ever captured in the history of America. James Bradley took unbounded care to trace and speak with friends and family who in reality knew the men portrayed. He received great admiration and honor for his realistic depictions and giving life to the men involved in this historic event.

Choose one of the major characters and describe his life before the battle and before the war. Why did you choose him?

One of the major characters portrayed in this book is Ira Hayes. Hayes was born on the Gila River Indian reservation (pg.01). His parents were Job and Nancy Hayes of the Pima tribe. Hayes was the oldest of six kids in a Christian family (pg.01). He had a very calm personality and, akin to his father, was very quiet. But when he did speak, he exhibited a dedicated mind and expressive speech. Hayes was fond of reading all kinds of books. He got enrolled in the Marines just 9 months following the attack on Pearl Harbor (pg.01). Ira Hayes joined the Second World War to stand up for freedom and to defend his nation. His community sent him off to combat with a traditional Pima ceremony (pg.01). Hayes's tribe talked to him regarding loyalty, honor, family and his public. The Pima Indians were against war and the brutalities associated with it (pg.03); however, in this regard, the elders had the same opinion that it was needed. I chose Ira Hayes because he was one of the audacious survivors of this war.

What were his hopes, dreams, and fears? Why was he fighting? What happens to him during the battle and after?

Ira Hayes was closely following the war reports. Subsequent to the attack of Japan on Pearl Harbor, he considered that it is his ...
