Introduction
The purpose of this paper is to expand the boundaries of our knowledge by exploring some relevant facts and figures related to Mergers and Acquisitions. Furthermore, the author will examine the various aspects of Mergers and Acquisitions in the Field of Accounting and Finance.
Mergers, the combination of two or more organizations for mutual gain, and takeovers, the acquisition of a majority of shares in a company in order to gain control, are central features of the corporate economy in the US and the UK. They are becoming increasingly important in other economies.
During the years of 1895 and 1905, there were small companies with little market these companies began to consolidate with companies like themselves to create bigger companies, more powerful institutions that dominated their markets. This movement was so powerful that in the 90's, business mergers that occurred were 20% of GDP and in 1990 was only 3%. Because of these mergers, many companies were created to become one of the strongest known today in the market. Thus began the trend of mixing business, which become dominant in the business and give consumers what they need or want at a price they can afford.
It is difficult to name a sector of the global business world that has not been touched by the recent wave of merger activity. Mergers, which occur when two companies join to form a single company, have been completed or announced in industries as diverse as telecommunications, auto manufacturing, banking, airlines, computers, retail, publishing, defence contracting, pharmaceuticals and health care over the past few years.
