Introduction

Towards the end of 15th century, Italian thinkers developed this thought they are living in the new era and the barbarous phase i.e. middle age is over. According to them, the new era would be marked as rebirth of art and literature. This period in history was known as Renaissance. Between the 14th and 17th century, a replacement of old and backward thinking was done by a modern one. In Italy and the other parts of Europe, Renaissance was considerably complicated. Man was regarded as the centre of his own universe in scientific, cultural and artistic achievements of Renaissance (Andrea B, 2004).

There was a great revival of interest in both the classical learning and values of ancient Greece and Rome that was known as Renaissance and followed the period immediately after the middle Ages in Europe. In all these advancements along with the new developments, there was a continuous ongoing development of literature, philosophy and especially art. In Italy, Renaissance was identified by the sculpturing, style of painting and decorative arts. However, this phase reached its apex during the 15th and early 16th centuries because of the works of Italian artists such as Michelangelo, Raphael and Leonardo da Vinci. The beauty and the mystery of the natural world thus captured the experience of the individuals in Renaissance (Brigstoke H, 2001).

Paintings of those times were appreciated for their artistic works as well as for their subject matters and were often placed in specially created galleries. The artistic works of Rome and Greece flourished less significantly than that in Italy. The Italian Renaissance was more like a reinterpretation of the already existing techniques.
