Introduction

Fairy tale films offer a fresh consideration with respect to the art that life tries to be like a fairy tale or a fairy tale is trying to be like a life in terms of happening when the storyline becomes filmic. In present days, fairy tale films provides considerable thoughts to its viewers to think about new meaning of old stories with respect to the presentation to contemporary audience. Fairy tale films which are defined as movie or a television version of international wonder tales while, cinematic folklore are representing the other conventional varieties in film. The Fairy tale films as well as cinematic folklore together are capable of communicating ideas with respect to the gender that have numerous connotations for their originators as well as for the spectators. A deep understanding of the theme of gender specification with respect to the fairy tale films and significance of cinematic folklore can be better understood with the concepts of feminist and queer film theory. Furthermore, in terms of gender contributions to fairy tale films, the role of women in fairy tales has a need of reevaluation regarding popular culture of fairy tales cinematography. The conventional folklore established the role of women in the form of gatekeepers, midwives and matchmakers, which were limited until in 1970s, when feminism was appeared as a discipline to folklore for researching and they began to consider representations of women in terms of giving valued to them in specific cultures. In terms of fairy tales, the feminist scholars conducted research on commonly notions which were related to women and their associations to different genres. They initially focused significantly on the images which were portrayed by women in folk tales as well as in fairy tales but later on, the research was conducted on the basis of gender related perspectives in order to explore many important issues for discussion with respect to the wide range of analyses.

In order to develop the understanding in respect of the Fairy tale films and cinematic folklore along with gender representation, a film has been selected for conducting research and analyses. The selected film is “A Cinderella Story”, which was released in 2004 under the distributed banner of Warner Bros. The film was a teen romantic comedy starring Hilary Duff, Jennifer Coolidge, Chad Michael Murray and Regina King and it was directed by Mark Rosman.

The plot of the film “A Cinderella Story” revolves around two internet friends, who meet with each other at school dance party and they fall in love with each other. Unfortunately, they are separated from each other due to certain circumstances and finally the movie is ending up when Sam (Hilary Duff) is happily living with Austin (Chad Michael Murray) officially as a couple.
