Feminism and Marxism

Introduction

Feminism and Marxism are both theories about power and it's in equal distribution. They both provide detailed accounts of social arrangements that show patterned disparity that is justified internally but unfair. This study will talk about feminism and its movements and Marxism. The main purpose of the study is to show the relationship of feminism and Marxism in the art history.

Feminism

All along the history, women have always strived for their equality, rights and the respect as similar to those of men. However, there are some ideologies such as patriarchy that considers men being superior to women and has the right to control them. Throughout the world it, this ideology has spread among different social structure of the societies. This has led the women in struggling for rights as most men take women for granted (Engle, 2010, Pp. 1-40).

Feminism is a philosophy that support women and recognize their contribution as well. It is essential that women are treated equally in social, political and economical level. Furthermore, it demands equal opportunities for women in employment and education (McCann, 2003, Pp. 206-230).

The revolution that is asked for is the world to be equal. No boundaries such as discrimination and biases against the gender will create equality amongst all. These discriminations are against age, sexual orientation, gender, marital status and economic status. Feminist see the world as its being unequal and hope to decrease the gender gap or abolish the ideology of men being superior to men (Jackson, 1998, Pp. 12-30).

In 1790's the concept of equality was at initial stages. In 1792, Mary Wollstonecraft argued that women are not inferior to men. If they are not as capable as men its only because of the poor education and they are given less opportunities and not because women are inherent or less able than men. The modern women movement started in the late 18th century when the philosophers emerged endorsing the concept of equality among humans. In the 19th century women won the right to vote in many European Countries and by the 20th century it was also implemented in US (Levin, 1987,Pp. 16-70).

Feminist art history

The feminist art history mainly focuses on the women as viewers, artist, patrons, or subjects. Many of the artists in this field address the issue of women that includes the experience of being a woman, the idea of femininity. What and how the women are presented in the society, her imagery and the ideologies-all are covered in the feminist art (Weeks, 2011, Pp. 10-27).

The history of feminist is divided into three waves. The first wave started off with the work of Mary Wollsttonecraft, which was published in 1792. This work becomes the first classic of feminism. The author criticizes the exclusion of women in the rights designed by Rousseau political theory, the refusal to provide citizenship for women and educational exclusion. At the initial stage of feminist art history, 1971 in US, Linda Nochlin published an article titled “why has there ...
