Introduction

Female circumcision is generally described as the tradition of removing or altering the external genitals of girls. It is mainly confined to parts of Africa, Asia and the Middle East. Nonetheless, the practice is not exclusive to these areas. There are reports that female circumcision has been practiced by the Romans and in the U.S and England in the 19th century until it was stopped in 1973. The practice is reported to have occurred recently in North America and Europe among immigrants from countries where the practice is common.
