Introduction

In a globalized world, media play a key role in consumption process of a person.

When we think of some of our favorite film immediately an iconic sartorial image pop up in our mind. This is because of the fashion. Fashion takes direct inspiration from popular images and icons of all edges: art, music, culture and above all, cinema. Fashion is a periodic system of introducing changes in lifestyle of individuals. In all ages of mankind, fashion has existed. The notion fashion is used in much broader sense than just clothes such as hairs, makeup, begs, accessories, phones etc. Fashion feeds the desire to excel, to appear different from the mass, stand to be admired and envied. Film is always a product of political and socio economic times. Fashion is the imaginary story of shared desires, is the power, the spectacle, and the homogeneous. Fashion and films formed a marriage that has never been divorced, but, on the contrary, every day it's getting better and better. No doubt it was the film that gripped the characteristics of fashion to create stars and aspirations figures bring the whole world comes to Hollywood, his way of combining the business and art (Rachel, 1974, 484).

It is argued that fashion is one of the strong forces behind most discretionary spending of a consumer. Fashion not only influence what we wear but it also influence how we live and what we do. The main function of the fashion to the producer is product obsolescence creation. Manufacturer use fashion as a competitive device and not from today but from 1950s, manufactures and designers has tried to influence people with the help of movies and films. Current cinema has made use of symbiotic relationship between film and fashion. Thus in this paper I am going discuss the relationship between films and fashion. I shall be in depth focusing on the relationship between consumption of fashion and films as it is stated by Charles Eckert that “Hollywood arguably have modern consumerism its distinctive bent”. In this paper we shall be analyzing the movie Gidget because this movie is considered as a significant element in shaping the fashion of adolescent female identity. The purpose of writing this paper is to let the reader know about the influence of films on the fashion sense of ordinary people and how consumption of fashion as increased because of films. Brigitte Bardot is a fashion icon that has can be discussed as a good example to determine the relationship between films and fashion. (Gaines, 1990, 32)
