Introduction

Family system therapy is a kind of counseling through which complexities and troubles in family relationships are treated by specialized counselors. Therapists deal with the family problems and provide them with such solution as which can ease down the tension among the members of the family. The aim and objective of this assignment is to define and explain Family system therapy, its background and discuss three different types of therapy which are structural, strategic and experiential. It has been commonly perceived that whatever is the origin of the problem and whether it is an individual or issues that are confronted by the family the case is looked at in its own capacity. The direct participation of the family in these group therapy sessions work really well for them. The overall skill level of the therapist also has an impact of the eventual success of the family system therapy.

Family System Therapy

Family therapy is also known as couple therapy. It is a branch of psychotherapy which aims to identify the intricacies in the relationships and allow those relationships to develop in an amicable manner. It put great importance on reviving the family relationships and considers it a pivotal factor in psychological health. Difficulties in family relationships are identified by the therapist through interactive sessions in which counselors tend to identify the problems which couple or members of the family are facing (Tyndall et al, 2012). Family therapists act as a mediator and influencer. Their ultimate objective is to settle all the possible differences which the family members are facing in a healthy environment.

History and Background of Family system therapy

In early days, whenever couple or members of the family encountered with any sort of family problems, the head members of the society sometimes act as a mediator and used to do the same job which nowadays family therapists are doing. Formal interventions among the family members and couple can ease down the tensions and complexities among the members of the family. In extended family system, family problems are usually addressed by head of the families who acts as a mediator and resolve the issues within the families. Family system therapy has now become a professional practice in the Western culture.

The origin of this practice can be traced back to early 20th century when child guidance movement and marriage counseling came on the screen (Tyndall et al, 2012). The formal developments in the family system therapy took place in early 1950s after the establishment of American Association of Marriage Counselors in which various therapists started to deal with family and couple problems.
