Gordon's functional health patterns

Gordon's functional health patterns are created over 11 principles which are integrated over the nursing process. They act as a structure to the clinical evaluation which can be applied over the individual, family and societal basis. Through this structure, information is gathered and evaluated which allow the nurse for further diagnoses as well as interventions that cover a holistic view of the patient. Overall there are 11 patterns and each of the patterns consists of four focal areas (Gorden, 2011).

When the patterns are incorporated together, the health patterns are able to create a nursing evaluation which allows an opportunity to identify any current and potential health concerns. The patterns promote a holistic nursing by the assessment of various physical, environmental, social as well as spiritual aspects. The structural assessment focuses to determine who is in the family, the related relationships between the family members and people who are outside the family as well as the context of the family.

In order to aid efficient nursing intervention, it is mandatory to implement critical thinking expertise by the nurse. This assists in accurate and adequate evaluation of the client/ patient over the basis of data and evaluation of information gather by the patient (Gorden, 2011).
