Facebook

Introduction

Age, gender, and marital status have gigantic effect on the people, and it inclines them to have a number of friends on Facebook. People in higher age bracket are likely to have a lower number of friends in their Facebook list. Females tend to have a greater number of friends in Facebook than males. It has also been expounded by a multitude of observations that the people who are already in some relationships lean to have negative stimulations towards making Facebook contacts.

Background

Facebook is perhaps the most visible and ubiquitous of the Web 2.0 applications that have made their way from Internet isolation to pop culture phenomena. While not the first “social networking” application, Facebook has unquestionably been the most successful, expanding its user base and finding ways to keep those users online for long periods of time. Facebook represents a unique opportunity for sport marketers but also presents some unique challenges (Abram &Pearlman, 2008).

Facebook was launched in 2004 as a way, for college students at Harvard University, to post information about them and interact with one another. Over the next few years, Facebook expanded to all college campuses and became a part of Generation Y pop culture. The main competitor for Facebook, a service called MySpace, had similar characteristics in that it allowed individuals and groups to create their own self-maintained WebPages without having to know how to write programming language (Schepp, 2010).

Back in the olden days of Facebook, the site gave its members an easy way, to connect with each other one-on-one based on shared interests and other profile information, such as political views, hobbies, or favorite bands. You simply typed in what folks you wanted to meet—for example, single moms in your area who like to knit—and bingo: You got an instant list of potential pals, entire with an implicit conversation opener(Shih, 2009). You can still search for kindred spirits on Facebook—after all that is one of the reasons Facebook is so popular—but to keep from becoming a giant spam free-for-all, the site has changed the way you search. Rather than the advanced search feature, you used to use, Facebook now offers four different ways to find like-minded members:

Hypotheses

Age, gender, and marital status affect the number of people the users have on their Facebook.

Discussion

In real-world, contexts and online contexts, the homogenizing force of gender, age and marital status as a socially constructed variable has impacted the creation and composition of social networks (Dunay, 2010). The relationship between gender and social networks can be examined in both face-to-face environments and online environments, with the latter exploration including pre-Web 2.0 environments and subsequent to the development of blog and social networking sites.
