The main purpose of this paper is to select an evidence based practice and focus on one issue. The issue chosen in this paper is doing learning disability patients find patient care approach (CPA) beneficial for acute pain. Evidence-Based Practice (EBP) has its origins in medicine, beginning its development in Canada since the discipline of clinical epidemiology, where the group Sackett, in the late 70's is trying to incorporate research clinical decision making for patients. Another Canadian group led by Guyatt in the 90's promoted the use of mathematical-based research and statistical evidence. At the same time, the gap between books and periodical literature facilitated the birth of this new paradigm (Abrami, 2008, p. 151). Evidence-Based Nursing (EBN) develops later in English-speaking countries, initially taking a positivist framework of medicine. This paper will follow the systematic review. Systematic review includes:
specify the question to be addressed by the systematic review;
define the criteria for eligibility of studies for inclusion;
identify (all) studies that may be eligible;
apply the eligibility criteria as to minimize bias;
collect a percentage as high as possible of relevant information from the studies;
using meta-analysis and a variety of analysis to examine this information, if applicable and feasible, and
preparing a structured report.
In the part of critical appraisal, appraisal of one research paper is made among the five research articles. Last but not the least; the evidence will be applied to my practice.
Background and Formulation of a Question
The question discussed in this paper is do learning disability patients find patient care approach (CPA) beneficial for acute pain relief?
Patient
The patients in this question are the learning disability patients suffering from the acute pain.
Intervention (or cause, prognosis)
The intervention or the therapy will be through different exposures and measures.
Comparison (optional)
There is not any alternative treatment to compare.
Outcome
The clinical outcome will present the evidences and the reasons for the PICOT question and the time frame for this will be 2 months.
Systematic Literature Review

Name the 5 research articles
Article 1: Pain management for older people with learning difficulties and dementia
Article 2: Detecting pain in people with profound learning disabilities
Article 3: Comprehensive health care services for people with learning disabilities
Article 4: Assessing general practitioners' care of adult patients with a learning disability: case-control study
Article 5: Care of patients with intellectual or learning disability in primary care: no more funding so will there be any change
Article 1 - State the theme. Outline the aims of the result, the samples size, the geographical setting and the key findings as well as any limitations. Identify other literature and research studies used.
The main theme of the article is to manage the acute pain in the older people suffering from the learning disabilities. This article gives the different guidance on the ways through which nurses can manage the acute pain among the older people who suffer from the learning disabilities (Greenwald, 2001, p. 17). The article also gives reviews about the patient care approach for the ...
