Applying Evidence Based Practice

Summary

The evidence based practice is the integral part of the clinical practice in providing the health care services to the patients. The evidence from the research studies is important for the provision of quality care at every step of the treatment or surgical procedure. The main issue discussed in this report is associated to the standardized management of blood glucose level in patients with diabetes mellitus undergoing the surgery on the same day. Researcher has selected one relevant article illustrating the solution of the problem. Moreover, this report contains the critical appraisal of the selected article along with the justification, strengths and weaknesses the proposed protocol of “Perioperative Glycemic Management” to control the blood glucose level. Researcher discusses the significance and benefits of the study. He also highlighted the importance of the search strategy along with the criteria of searching the perspective article. This reports completes with the recommendation and conclusion covering the problem and its proposed solution. Acknowledgment is also given at the end of the report.

Applying Evidence Based Practice

Introduction

The evidence based practice is helpful for nurses in providing the procedure to utilize scientifically proven and critically appraised evidence to deliver the health care services of greater standard (Majid et al, 2011, p. 229). For this purpose, nurses must aware of the importance regarding information, evidence based practice and the aspects creating and encouraging the obstacles in adapting. A large number of articles and journals are available on internet databases to provide the knowledge and evidence for practice concerning any issue. Any clinical condition, such as diabetes mellitus, requires the substantial knowledge from the research studies in order to provide the quality care. There are several protocols and approaches provided by the researchers via their studies with respect to desired condition or requirement. It depends on the health care provider to search and evaluate the required information. With respect to the working area of the researcher, he selected the article related to the management of blood sugar in the perioperative phase for the patients of diabetes mellitus undergoing the surgery.

Justification of the Selected Study

The researcher works in the pre surgical testing unit of the hospital setting. Researcher often observes the effects of diabetes on the patients undergoing to the surgical procedure. He noticed that the diabetic patients were prone to infections and had possessed the slow rate of healing. However, researcher understands that patients require the strict control on their blood glucose before, during and following the surgical procedure. With respect to the previous research studies, several providers feel the importance, which offered the general range of the diabetes burden worldwide, as well as the fact constantly stating the insufficient control of blood glucose in present scenario. The protocol of Perioperative Glycemic Management have not only been given emphasis to implement but also considered as ...
