Salbach, M N. Veinot, P. Jaglal, S.B. Bayley M. & Rolfe, D (2011). From continuing education to personal digital assistants: what do physical therapists need to support evidence-based practice in stroke management? Journal of Evaluation in Clinical Practice 17, pp. 786- 793.

Study Purpose

The study by Salbach et al (2011) was executed to fulfil the purpose of investigation of the preferences of the physical therapists regarding the strategies which can be helpful for them in the application and examination of stroke research. The three main strategies that are used to assist in the examination and application of research are Education, technology and resources.

Different methods of CE are important to increase the evidence based practice like the use of PDA is helpful in engagement of physicians to the evidence based practice. This is required not only in the physical therapy field but in all fields. In addition, the use of PDA is helpful in terms of cost effectiveness, accuracy, reliability, ease of access and accessibility. A review of the previous research has been done that effectively caters to the virtues of continuing education and the trends involved in it (Mathur et al., 2005). The study by Salbach et al (2011) focuses on the surveys conducted regarding the query as to how the physical therapist accessed the literature regarding stroke in the past. It also focuses on the fact as how the research from the past studies can be useful for future research and interventions. The study also formed a link between the evidence based practice and delivery of service in a stroke management clinic or setting. The study purpose was also acknowledged in the last paragraph of introduction in the paper stating, "The objective of the current study was to explore physical therapists' preferences for strategies, including education, resources or technology, which would facilitate access to, and evaluation and implementation of the stroke research literature in clinical practice." (Salbach et al, 2011, pp. 787). This paper will highlight study design, study purpose, literature review, population sampling, data collection, ethical considerations, data analysis, data handling, findings, transferability and ultimately the implications on evidence based practice of physical therapy.

This topic has not been focused much previously rather there are many researches available on nurses, doctors and other healthcare professionals. Few of the previous surveys and literature reviews indicate that the physical therapists did not learn the basics of evidence based practice. The past decade of Evidence based practice has shown great momentum in setting the gold standards in every healthcare profession (Prasun, 2013, pp. 1). Evidence based practice serves as a foundation to enable physical therapist in taking effective decisions and producing dynamic outcomes with superlative clinical judgment (Schreiber et al, 2006). For this purpose, adequate education and awareness sessions of already practicing physical therapists and ...
