Introduction

This paper intends to explore about evidence based practice. After a deep rooted discussion about evidence based practice, its relevance and examples in child health nursing will be discussed.

Discussion

The concept of evidence based practice basically deals with applying the best researches that are available in the fields of health, behavior and education services. This concept is mostly and widely used in the field of medicine. The evidence based practice approach is gaining importance in the field of health care as the time is moving. It has created several challenges for health professionals to be in touch with the updated information and practicing techniques. Everyday nursing practices are now requiring the need of applying evidence (LoBiondo, Haber, 2006).

Evidence Bases Practice is a discipline which is gaining popularity since 1992. It traces its roots from the field of medicine as Evidence Based Medicine (EBM) and is now extended to even the field of nursing. This concept suggests that all the decisions that are important enough must be based on scientific researches and the researches must be selected and interpreted according to the guidelines provided by the concept of EBP (Marita, 2008).

Another concept of being evidence based in the field of health care is providing evidence based treatments. This approach is easily extended to the field of nursing. It requires that all the decisions being made to treat anyone must be based on evidence and its scientific usefulness. This approach helps in eliminating risks that are assumed to hinder the expected results. All the relevant information available must be utilized in order to provide the best results and become evidence based practitioners (Sacket, Rosenberg & Richardson, 1996).

The process of Evidence Based Practice starts with formulating a relevant question, than collecting the evidence and lastly critically appraising the evidence found. Evidence Based Practice considers critical appraisals important because of the fact that it improves the access to quality researches. Critical thinking is considered important because it helps develop alternative methods in the field of nursing. There is a need to further develop the practice of critical thinking and critical appraisals in order to make the challenges in the field of nursing more interesting and leading towards immense learning.
