Accident Causation Models

Introduction

There are many reasons that are being cited for the apparent causation of accidents at the workplace. The human error is the most compound one, but at the same time there are uncontrollable physical circumstances as well. Pure technical error is also one of the reasons for the causation of the accident. While the methods have somewhat improved as far as technical proficiency is concerned. When we look at the proportion of the accidents that are caused by technical error, they are somewhat lesser in quantity as compared to the accidents that are caused by human error. There is also human error at the backhand of some of the technical accidents. While the human error has not caused that much harm as far as injury or death is concerned, but the economic loss is of great proportions when we look at the way human error has influenced the firm (Suraji & Peckitt, 2001). The prevention of both type of accidents are the major priority of the firms these days, and they have gained increased importance. First we should be able to understand to extent the role that human error plays in the accidents. It is viewed as the collective failure of individuals to reach to a goal that was being planned. This holds true we take a narrow look at the things, or we take the broader perspective, either it was a deliberate attempt or just a mistake triggered by circumstances (Suraji & Peckitt, 2001). All these things ay stop the organization to reach to its desired outcomes.

For the safety management to be effective and to identify the potential risk, one should be able to bifurcate the human error in the accident as well as to look at the probable reason for the collapse of the system (Suraji & Peckitt, 2001). Due to this increasing sterling scenario, one should be able to devise some sort of mechanism for the prevention of accidents. And for that purpose, there is some accident prevention theory that has been put together. Three of them are discussed below.

As it was discussed above, this theory presents an argument that even though purely technical errors and shoddy physical circumstances might cause an accident, some way or another, there is a human error involved in it. This model emphasizes on the impact human error has on the causation of the accidents (Mitropoulos, 2005). This argument stems from a fact that due to the upheaval and escalation in the level of technology that has been incorporated, the chances of technical errors are slim these days as far as the technical side is taken into concern. Considerable economic and financial damage has been caused to entities due to the human error and its extremeness.
