Euthanasia physician assisted suicide

Introduction

Euthanasia is derived from a Greek word which means “good death”; it is an act of ending the breath of a human being through the suspension of medical treatment. Many of the people are against this practice and don't agree to implement this in the medical institutions, where as a few people consider it as a relief for the suffering patients. In simple words it is referred as “mercy killing” (Osgood, pp. 105-156). Euthanasia enchants the medical activities as a debatable matter which requires massive implication. A plenty of reasons accounts for the fact that euthanasia is not acceptable easily. Physician assisted euthanasia is when a doctor assists the action of killing the patient through medications (Osgood, pp. 105-156). In this kind of euthanasia physician plays an important role. There are various types of euthanasia which defines different situations (Hedberg, p.961).

The first one is defined as voluntary euthanasia whichoccurs when the person himself endures the request to face the mercy killing to get helped. When the patient is unable to bear the pain he requests the physician to endow him with euthanasia (Hedberg, p.961). The next one is Involuntary euthanasia which occurrs when the patient is unaware of the fact that he is being killed by the physicians in order to reduce his pain. This type of euthanasia takes place without the consent of the patient. Sabsequently active euthanasia takes place when the life ends with the help of any drug either by the physician or by oneself solely where as Passive euthanasia takes place when the basic needs are not taken with the will to die or end his/her life. It can be done if food, water or required medication is stopped or any medicine operation is followed. Physician-assisted suicide is done with the assistance of the physician through the overdose of any medicine. It usually takes place intentionally where as assisted suicide carried out with a help of another person, which means ending a life with the assistance of a second individual (Hedberg, p.961).

This research paper is based on the topic of Euthanasia physician assisted suicide. The thesis statement for this paper is the practice of Euthanasia is considered to be made legalize on certain stages. This is because when the pain of any patient goes beyond limits so it is only the physicians who could help them through this act. Furthermore I will be discussing the favoring and opposing arguments regarding this topic.

Discussion

The practice of euthanasia has expanded and gained much superiority in the West because they mainly believe in personal independence. People and societies in the West consider it as self-sufficiency. The western societies keep on debating on the practice of euthanasia regularly so that it can be added in their cultures. Although it is debatable but they believe that it should be highlighted in different situations (Quill and Battin, p.11).
