Euthanasia

Introduction

Talking about euthanasia is a controversial issue. Since its legalization in the Netherlands in 1984 by decision of the Supreme Court, has caused great debate among sectors that are in favor and against this practice (Harrelson, Greg & Winterstein, pp 130 - 141). The World Health Organization (WHO) defines it as the action of the doctor who deliberately causes the death of the patient (Downing, Smoker, pp 45 - 49).

Refers to death procured precisely "compassion", with interventions that aim to alleviate the agony, or to end a painful incurable disease (Harrelson, Greg & Winterstein, pp 130 - 141). In this case is defined as "active euthanasia". If you stop all treatment, to make room for the natural process of death, is called "passive euthanasia" (as the case of Terry Schiavo, some time ago). This topic has been discussed as a result of the last bill introduced in Parliament concerning passive euthanasia. The project complies with the art. 575 / c of our Criminal Code provides that, for those who kill or "let die" out of compassion for a terminally ill, a minimum sentence of twenty years imprisonment, reduced, in accordance with Art (Harrelson, Greg & Winterstein, pp 130 - 141).
