The history of Atlantic City is varied and a long one. Though, the exact date of first settlement is not confirmed but it is said that Jeremiah Leeds made a permanent residence there in 1783(Johnson & Winter, 2010, pp. 35-45). With the course of the time the Island was recognized for its climate and beaches and by 1850 it was identified by Dr. Jonathan Pitney for a resort development. The layout of the city was designed by a civil engineer Richard B. Osborne, and the name Atlantic City was also proposed by him.
The reasons behind rapid growth of the city were its entertainment and amusement offers such as lodging, dining, resorts, Boardwalk, floorshows, amusement piers and beauty pageants (Leibowitz, 2009, pp. 12-18). It was the best try out for theatrical production in 1920s and remained major vacation spot from 1880s to 1940s. Popularity of the Atlantic City resorts started declining by 1950s because many vacations spots were available at that time in Florida and Caribbean. Like many other centers, the Atlantic City was also facing economic and social problems in 1960s, as it was totally dependent on tourists while they were accessing other cities for enjoyment.
In order to rebuild the city and increase the tourist's trade, the Atlantic City was launched in 1976 when gambling was legalized by New Jersey voters in a referendum (Levi, & Eisenberg, 1994, pp. n.d.). Although the idea of legalizing the gambling was criticized many critics, it was favored by other because the declining economy of the city wanted a boost by any means. The immense success and growth of the gaming industry was not predicted when the first casino “Resorts International” was established in 1978. Its impacts on the city, region and the state were tremendous (Karmel, 2007, pp. n.d.). Within a decade there were dozens of casinos operating in the city and the numbers of tourists had increased from 700,000 of 1978 to more than 30 million in 1988.
The tax of the city also accelerated to over $6.7 billion by the year 2000, which was $316 million more than in 1976 (Grinols, 2009, pp. 156). The impacts of this innovation can be observed in the shape of revived infrastructure of neighborhood, revised public facilities, new housing projects and other socio-economic and cultural programs. In all, The Atlantic City provides a wide range of entertainment and attraction to its visitors which are also a key for their successful future just like their past claim to be the Queen of Resorts.
