Relationship between Ethics and Professionalism in Criminal Justice
Criminal justice system is one of the vital organs of the state which has to function according to the highest level of professional standards. The professionalism in the administration of the criminal justice requires the professionals to carry out their work not only according to law but also ethically. The police officer collecting evidence, the prosecution building the case against accused and court trying the same requires to uphold the best standards of ethics (Lopez & Thomas, 2004). All these officials have ample opportunity to destroy or implant the evidence to implicate an accused which they think is the real criminal. A DNA profile can be collected from the accused while he is in custody and can be planted on the evidence (Walsh, 2005). It is equally important in the justice system to develop and establish ethical standards and provide training to the office bearers.
Critical thinking provides the bases for the people in criminal justice system to make decisions using the ethical training while fulfilling their professional duties (Morgan et al., 2000). Police officers which come in direct contact with public on daily bases, have to take numerous decisions using their critical thinking and ethical training. They cannot go beyond the law but use their discretion in making decisions based on situation. A traffic police officer working in a racial neighborhood may make a different decision issuing a ticket to the traffic violator then in another area, using his discretion.
