Introduction

In spite of organizations having a hundred page ethical code of conduct and value guidelines, ethical dilemmas take place every day. Ethical dilemmas occur from inappropriate behavior such as insider trading, harassment, accounting fraud or false marketing. Basically, ethic is derived from philosophy and it questions about personal morals and values. Ethical dilemmas can be resolved if appropriate decision making is done. Upholding ethical dilemmas in organizations promote a better workplace environment (McDevitt & Van, 2002, p.261). At work, ethics is considered to be a choice which may not always make an individual feel comfortable but, right choice must be made.

The paper examines an ethical dilemma which was experienced and the actions that were taken for it. Further, the paper explores alternative course of actions which could have been selected for the same ethical dilemma. Lastly, the paper elaborates that for the same ethical dilemmas will an individual select same course of action or different.

Analysis

The compliance to ethical standards at workplace largely depends on how the organizational culture instills ethics. To ensure that employees are following ethical standards, the ethical goals and objectives must be reinforced on regular basis on the employees (Stillman, 2010). If the top management is transparently following ethics than the probability of employees doing unethical activities decreases.

Each of has the autonomy to make decisions and choices on the matter of ethical or unethical behavior. The choices we make are often based on the moral values a person holds and has established throughout the life time. Every one of us has a set of values which conflict with the values of other as we enter the workplace. Few people think that the choices do not need to be ethically correct and some think only ethical choices are correct.

Ethical Dilemma

Almost each of us has their own set of morals and virtues which they hold within. It is considered to be the ethical standard which one holds throughout life time. There are majority of choices and actions which an individual can undertake in or during ethical dilemma. However, there are also times when clashes of values take place between one and another individual. In many situations during a life time an ethical dilemma will emerge from the differences of beliefs and values among individuals (Miao-Ling, n.d., p.105).

The ethical dilemma which I faced at workplace is related to stealing of organizational property. The ethical dilemma which I witnessed took place when I was sitting on my desk at office. There were two co-workers who were planning to steal organization's asset, laptop. The two co-workers were from the same designation which I belonged to. There were discussing about how to steal laptop considering no one was around, they discussed the complete plan. One of the co-workers looked back and saw me sitting at my desk but, he ignored and turned back to continue the planning.
