Abstract

In this research paper I have identified the ethical dilemma of Confidentiality in professional psychology. Although there are comprehensive codes and guidelines to overcoming such dilemma but sometimes the issues are unique and not covered in any guidelines. For that purpose I have applied the fourteen points of ethical decision making on a supposed scenario to deliver my understanding on the mentioned topic. In the end I have also discussed the importance of ethical decision making in the healthcare profession.

Ethical Decision Making

Introduction

A professional psychologist bases his analysis and diagnosis of his or her patient's condition by gaining access to very personal information. Therefore a strong mechanism of ethical codes and standards is required so that the individuals feel relax and comfortable in disseminating such information to the psychologist. Confidentiality of such information is extremely important otherwise violation of this confidentiality between the psychologist and the individuals will not only tarnish the trust but may lead to legal actions against the psychologist or his institution.

American Psychological Association has prepared extensive guidelines for psychologist known as Ethical Principles of Psychologists and Code of Conduct. This document enlists ethical codes that apply to psychologist's activities that are related to professional, educational or scientific roles as psychologists. The same ethical code states that psychologists have a most important duty to safeguard the confidential information of their patients or clients. They must take every reasonable step and precaution to protect that information which is obtained through or is stored in any medium (APA, n.d, p.1).

Discussion

Confidentiality

Breaching confidentiality in professional psychology is one of the important ethical dilemmas faced by the psychologists and their clients. Since the nature of job of a psychologist involves gaining extremely personal and sensitive information, confidentiality becomes prime significance here. But there are exceptions here as well, sometimes it is mandatory by the order of state, court or law decisions to disclose such information in which public interest is involved. A professional psychologist needs to be aware of such regulations (Anonymous, n.d, p.1). Other than these decisions psychologists still face issue of confidentiality in their work. Ethical dilemmas are the complex situations where the right course of action is not promptly available. Respect for confidentiality and privacy is one of the many ethical issues faced by psychologist and other health care providers. But to term this problem as a dilemma doesn't mean that it cannot be resolved. Fairly these dilemmas can be resolved consistently and adequately by using a clear outline of investigation and guiding principles for decision making (Weber, 1992, p.1).

Case Scenario

For the purpose of better understanding the application of the fourteen points of ethical decision making I have constructed a made up scenario with fictional names. I will be applying the fourteen points on the ethical dilemma of confidentiality mentioned in the scenario.
