Introduction

Erik Erickson is a psychoanalyst American author of a theory of psychosocial development in eight successive stages. He was born in Germany on 15th June 1902. In 1905, Karla Abrahamsen, the wife of Dr. Theodor Homberger, adopted a son and give his name (Stevens, 1983). Erikson will be named Homberger until his nationalization of U.S. before moving to Erik Erikson. Erik literally means son of Erik. He was married to Joan Erikson, with whom they had three children, Kai, Jon and Sue. Erik Erikson was analyzed by Anna Freud and trained in Vienna with Paul Federn, August Aichhorn, Heinz Hartmann, Helene Deutsch, etc (Welchman, 2000). He had no university education or medical degree, but immigrated to the United States following the rise of Nazism in Europe, he became a professor at Berkeley and Harvard. He took a keen interest in the mechanisms of identity construction. Erik Erikson died on May 12, 1994 in Harwich, Massachusetts, USA.

Theory of Psychosocial Development

The concept is derived from psychoanalysis, in which the leading role given to operations aware of the individual under the influence of the environment. The development is recognized as an evolutionary process in which the individual through the crises of psychosocial increasingly higher levels of integration (Click, 2011). It is done by solving the difficulties associated with changes in the levels at which it takes place such as biological, psychological and social oases. The development is therefore, a mutual adjustment to each individual and the environment. Ego is a configuration containing and controlling actions conscious. The basic processes of the ego are, fun, question, thought and action.

The driving force behind the development is the presence in man of opposing tendencies and aspirations. This polarization occurs in two dimensions: Striving for progression - the pursuit regression: Progression - presupposes desire to live, obtaining gratification, the desire to expand beyond me Regression - return to the stage less psychological complexity, implies striving for self-destruction Polarization bisexual : Element consists in the coexistence of masculine and feminine.

Development takes place in subsequent phases. Its course depends on the experience previously acquired by the entity. In each phase, there is a new arrangement of obstacles biological, social, psychological, causing the crisis and exacerbating the struggle between the aspirations for progression and regression (Cash, 2002). To go to the next phase, all obstacles must be overcome. Solution psychosocial crisis occurs when the obstacles, and pressures that have emerged at a time, are incorporated into the structure of the ego as part of a harmonious whole. Then the relative equilibrium is not so much recovered, which reached a higher level of complexity.
