Introduction

Environmental scanning is the first phase in strategic management.  This is where monitoring, evaluation, and dissemination of information from external and internal environments to key people within the corporation such as stakeholders exist.  An institution may look at internal environments such as opportunities and strengths as well as external environments such as threats and weaknesses. Often economic, technological and political forces are also examined during an environmental scan (Martin, 2001). Organizations use environmental scans to establish competitive advantages and thus determine how to align their competitive advantages with the organization's strategic plans.

While it is obvious that the most successful organizations have always been the most flexible and adaptable, which is new in the current situation is the diversity, pace and the interrelationship of the changes. Today they have the same importance, changes in social values ??in government regulations and developments in formulas for energy and the economy. The organization depends on the external environment, not only for their inputs but also for the acceptance of their products. The adjustment means for the organization to adapt to environmental demands are the channels of information.

University of Technology, Iraq

One of the largest universities in Iraq, University of Technology enjoys a significant position in the city of Baghdad. The university is specialized in the fields on Engineering, Computer Science, and Applied Sciences and technology. It further extends its dimensions into different areas within these broad categories. Founded in 1964, the university started its journey with scientific achievements and was initiated with the intention of establishing itself as an Institute of Industrial Teachers (Pedlar, 2007 ). The introduction of specialized learning sessions at the institute, was directed through recommendations and instructions of the Presiding Council of the Institute, and approved by the Ministry of Education.

The following pages will discuss the environmental effects and analyses in which the University of Technology operates in. There could be many threats and opportunities and in order to analyze the external environment of The University of Technology, comprehensive PEST analyses and porters five forces model will be used. Furthermore, with the use of SWOT analysis, we will analyze the threats and opportunities that The University of Technology can face from its external environment. In order to analyze the internal environment of the university, the hierarchal structure and culture will also be discussed.

Discussion

Every organization that operates and transects with its environment deals with both the macro level environment and micro level environment. Different models are used to analyze the environments. PEST analysis is used to analyze the macro level environment and Porters five forces are used to analyze micro level environment. In simple words, it is considered as the far environment for an organization (Northouse, 2007).
