Discussion

Mission

The term “mission” can be defined as a written statement of an organization's core function and focus that usually remains unchanged sooner or later. Appropriately crafted mission statements clearly mention which markets will be served and how and a sense of planned direction is communicated to the entire organization.

A mission differentiates from a vision as one is the cause and the other is the effect; a mission can be depicted as something to be achieved whereas a vision is something to be followed for that achievement. It is also called a corporate mission, company mission or a corporate purpose (Pattison, 2000).

A mission statement should be clearly written which can be easily understood by the employees and the stakeholders who have an interest in the activities of an organization. For example, the mission of TNT is to:

'Exceed customers' expectations in the transfer of their goods and documents around the world,

Deliver value to our customers by providing the most reliable and efficient solutions through delivery networks,

Seek to lead the industry by instilling pride in our people, creating value for our stakeholders and sharing responsibility around the world (The Times 100).

Aims and objectives

Aims can be defined as general statements that give an essential idea of what you want to accomplish. Whereas objectives are descendent of aims but more measurable and specific in nature. Objectives find out our efforts and are result oriented. For instance, a statement like “Improve the rating of our school's academic performance” forms an aim whereas “Achieve and maintain a standard academic performance rating 4.0 in the annual survey is an objective (Srivastav, Nainan, & Kamat, 2011).
