During the past century, community colleges have grown tremendously in number and have changed with the times. No other segment of postsecondary education has been more responsive to its community's workforce needs. At community colleges, students can learn at any point in their lives while taking advantage of low tuition, convenient campus locations, open admissions, and comprehensive course offerings. However, they are also hiring part time instructors who are low paid and are unable to give proper guidance to the students outside the classrooms. The ratio between full-time and part-time teachers in Virginia Community Colleges has changed from 75/25 in 1974 to about 50/50 at the present time (Townsend & Bragg 2006, pp.100). Concerns about the growing number of classes taught by part-time instructors were expressed by many people. However, part time faculty should be included as part of the department, and they should be invited to department meetings or asked to contribute ideas and opinions on topics on the agenda if they cannot attend. They should receive all department minutes and all division, campus, and college memos; and they should be informed of changes in course objectives, textbooks, curriculum requirements, and library holdings. They should be issued new college catalogs, college newsletters, and college calendars; and they should be invited to all social events. Many departments are already doing all or some of these things. Community colleges play a very crucial role in U.S. higher education. This is because half of the US undergraduates are enrolled by the colleges and this is important for the work force. American Graduation Initiative was announced by President Barack Obama earlier this year. Moreover, a 10-year; $12 billion plan to invest in community colleges, which underscore the importance of the community college system for the American economy. This was because more people are opting to study at the community colleges for the purpose of fulfilling their educational needs during the current economic downturn, it is important to have an informative picture of community college students, their goals, educational choices and outcomes. Compared to a traditional four-year college, a community college has several important advantages for students: an open admission policy, making it easier to enroll regardless of their prior academic record; lower tuition and fees; savings on room and board; and a more flexible curriculum and class schedule (Warren 1992, pp.100).
