An environmental scan was completed for the software and IT Service Company in the Washington, DC area. Politics plays a big role in the private business sector. Companies in the Washington, DC area focus on getting certified and applying for government contracts, as well as business in the private sector. Unemployment is 5.2% (Local Area Unemployment Statistics) in the Washington, DC area. Technology companies in this environment are amongst the top performers in the country. The Washington DC area was “named the fifth-best-performing metro region in the Institute's annual index of Best-Performing American Cities.” (Executive Office of the Mayor, 2013). This information gives us a lot to examine. 1. We will be able to find qualified employees, but it will be competitive to get and keep them. Even though the country is in a recession we will have to be smart and competitive with salaries, benefits, and pricing for services. 2. The IT industry in this area is growing but to survive we will have to examine it closely to find our niche'. One niche would be the construction industry. This industry is often behind in technology but with the help of our firms understanding how construction companies run and what their specific needs are we feel we could corner the market. Currently, there is no IT software and hardware company that is completely dedicated to construction in the area. After reviewing the construction industry in this area, construction is picking up with government contracts for building and commercial construction. 3. Companies with government contracts have needs that the private sector business doesn't. Being able to assist them in meeting these needs will give our company the competitive edge.
