Introduction

Since all goal oriented organisations desire achieving its objectives, it is necessary to train employees to effectively pursue those goals. The human resource or human capital of an organisation is made up of all the important and dynamic personnel available within the organisation (Choi & Dickson, 2010, p. 105). This human capital requires considerable care and attention from the management. The organisation must be careful in acquiring, utilising and maintaining its human resource and realising their optimum on-job potential. Training of organisation's human resource is a vital for employee's as well as organisation's development. The organisation and its management should ensure proactive or reactive ways for meeting the changes implemented within the organisation over a period of time (Choi & Dickson, 2010, p. 105).

Training is considered as a learning experience that attempts to bring in a permanent change in a person, which seeks to improve the abilities and competencies to perform the tasks. It is necessary that all organisations have experienced and well-trained human resources to effectively and efficiently perform their tasks and achieve organisation's goals (Choi & Dickson, 2010, p. 105). Organisations may provide training to its employees in order to change their skills, competency, behaviour, attitude, or knowledge. Organisation's may also want to change the way employees work, their attitude or behaviour towards the work itself, or their interaction or relationship with their peers and managers (Choi & Dickson, 2010, p. 105).

Discussion

The purpose of training is to develop the employees based on present day needs. It concentrates on existing or current jobs of individuals and helps in enhancing the abilities and competencies to perform those jobs well (Clegg, Rees & Titchen, 2010, p. 189). Organisations must not only focus on providing training to new employees but the existing personnel should also be provided training periodically in order to keep them updated (Clegg, Rees & Titchen, 2010, p. 189).

The idea of competency has been originated over a long time period. Competency plays a crucial role in the success of the organisation. Numerous researchers have discussed the significance of employee competency and its impact on the success of the organisation. Among various researchers, Choi & Dickso (2010) analysed the impact of employee competencies and the reflection of employee performance on the success of the organisation. Many researchers have also discussed the terms competency and competence interchangeably with the assumption that both the terms have the same meaning (Choi & Dickson, 2010, p. 106). This research study has discussed the role of training in enhancing employee competency.

A well designed and relevant training program directly effects employees' competency. If the organisations tailor employee training up to the needs of market as well as the individuals, then the employees will be able to carry out their required task more effectively and efficiently (Clegg, Rees & Titchen, 2010, p. 189).
