Tesco: Employee Motivation

Introduction

This assignment is based on a business case of Tesco Plc that how this organization will enhance its employee motivation. Tesco is the largest British retail chain, which also has international exposure in different markets. The company is currently the market leader in United Kingdom, Thailand and Malaysia and it also operates with his stores in 14 countries across Asia, Europe and North America. It is among the third largest retailer in the world by its revenue, 2012 revenue figure was around £ 64.54 billion. Apart from retail chain business, Tesco diverse its business in internet service, financial service, telecommunication, electronic, furniture etc (Motivational Theory In Practice At Tesco, 2013).

The motivation is one of the key variables in human resource management. Motivation is the driving force that influences people to accomplish a task and comprises of intrinsic or extrinsic factors. Intrinsic motives are based on the feelings of accomplishing something in order to gain internal values. Extrinsic factors, on the other hand, are based on external gains usually related to monetary benefits. Motivation may come from a person, thing, or feeling. For example, thirst is a motivation that influences a person to seek some liquid to quench his thirst. Another example of motivation is worked being linked to some monetary rewards. In such cases, the person will try to accomplish the task in order to gain the monetary reward. There are several theories and concept of motivation, all of which portray the same message (Cadwallader et.al, 2010).

Organizational Behaviour and Employee Motivation

Motivation plays a vital role in organizational behaviour and is one of its pillars. Without motivation, organizations may not be able to achieve its goals and objectives. Therefore, in order to be successful, every organization has to motivate its employees to keep the momentum of performance going. These motivational factors play an important role in determining the level of motivation. However, as time passes, the impact of these factors decreases and organizations need to continuously update the way they motivate their employees so that they get some new targets which eventually help them to try to achieve those targets.

The focus of Tesco is on the continuous learning of the employees along with the improvement and employee empowerment. The success of the company is highly dependent on the productivity and the performance of the teams and human capitals, however, the HR department should make sure that they bring in the more talented work force in the organization and design their jobs according to their qualifications. In order to motivate the employees, HR department has focused to implement the performance management systems, which will ensure employees that their efforts are gaining recognition.
