Abstract

Employee empowerment is a widely used term in the management. Many researchers have defined it differently on the basis id its various dimensions. The writers have used different words in explaining the same concept. The purpose of this research paper is to understand what employee empowerment is and how the employees feel about being empowered. It has also aimed to provide the understanding of how the managers and leaders perceive empowerment and the various theories that explain the concept of employee empowerment. The research paper revealed that employee empowerment benefits both organization and individuals. In order to have the successful implementation of this initiative, the managers and leaders need to assist the employee and training should also be provided to the employees for enhancing their abilities. It benefits the individuals and the organization equally. The organizations and leaders need to provide psychological empowerment to the individuals because it increases level of satisfaction and commitment among them which also results in lesser turnover.

Introduction

This research paper has been written to provide a proper understanding of employee empowerment and the way it benefits both the organization and the individuals. it also draws the attention of reader towards the various aspects of employee empowerment such as it benefits, barriers, perspectives, criticism that its literatures faces and the various theories that can be used to explain these concept.

Understanding Employee Empowerment

There are many magnitudes of employee empowerment that makes it complex to describe the concept. Different writers use different words in describing the same concepts. Before 1990, empowerment was a concept that was accessed in the articles only through issues like total quality control, participative management, individual development, strategic planning (Sullivan, 1994, p. n.d.).

From 1990 onwards, many articles have been written on this concept because employee empowerment describes both organizational aspect of the concept and the individual aspect. In order to have successful empowerment, every organization needs to define it. It is because empowerment need to address culture and needs of every entity. The absence of self-reference leads to failure of employee empowerment because sense of ownership and commitment is not developed (Honold, 1997, p. 202).

Different researchers view the dimensions of empowerment from various angles. Autonomy in ones job, control of owns work, variations in teamwork and the pay systems linking performance with pay are various aspects of empowerment. Some of these aspects focus on the individual's desire and ability for empowerment. It is also called the empowered state (Menon, 1995, p. n.d.).
