Significance and Prognosis of EI-LBBB

Introduction

The key objective of this assignment is to carry out research critique on the chosen research paper. The research paper chosen describes the disease mechanism and importance of left bundle branch block (LBBB), which is produced on exertion. The research was carried out in order to explain the unclear and foretelling significance which claims that around 0.5 percent of individuals who undergo exercise test are prone to develop left bundle branch block (LBBB).The major purpose of this research is to give a general view on the experimental and pathophysiological characteristics of exercise induced left bundle branch block (EI-LBBB), which are based on prior observations which are still applicable.

Left Bundle Branch Block

It is related with an elevation in the severity of cardiovascular diseases which may lead to heart dysfunction and ultimately death (Fahy et.al, 1996, p.1185). It is categorized by prolong electrical impulse activation in the left ventricle which results in inter and intra ventricular asynchrony which ultimately leads to systolic and diastolic dysfunction (Ozdemir et.al, 2001, p.1075).In the cases of known hypertension, left bundle branch block is a chief clinical finding. It may also be significantly associated with cardiomyopathy, coronary artery disease (CAD) and aortic valve disease (Littmann et.al, 2000, p.115).

Exertion/ Exercise Induced Left Bundle Branch Block

Exertion/exercise induced left bundle branch block LBBB can be explained in easy terms as a condition in which certain unusual changes are seen in the electrocardiographic waves. These changes in the waves of electrocardiogram may or may not lead to certain severe cardiac conditions. This disease occurs in around 0.5 percent of all individuals when they are exposed to exercise-stress test (Stein et.al, 2011, p.1). Generally, pre-existing LBBB may worsen the left ventricular function and furthermore may lead to heart failure. In some of the individuals exercise induced left bundle branch block was the most common sign which indicated the presence of heart diseases. The presence of EI-LBBB is related to a much weaker extent as compared to normal intra-ventricular conduction and right bundle branch block (RBBB) without associated heart diseases (Brethardt, 2012, p.107).

According to the research 17,277 individuals were exposed to exercise-stress test, out of which approximately 70 cases of exercise-induced LBBB were reported which means that out of 17,277 individuals 70 people were diagnosed with (EI-LBBB).The (ECG) readings recorded from these patients were evaluated by physicians to confirms exercise induced left bundle branch block. Twelve electrocardiograms (ECGs) were used for the diagnosis of LBBB and the changes seen in the (ECGs) confirmed the presence of exercise induced LBBB (Grady et.al, 1998, p. 153).

Explanation with the help of Electrocardiography

Twelve lead ECGs were carefully observed in order to find changes in the pattern of waves and were used to diagnose LBBB. The changes observed in the (ECGs) lead to the confirmation of left bundle branch block (LBBB). The major changes observed in the electrocardiograms (ECG) of individuals diagnosed with exercise-induced LBBB were compared with the standard (ECG), so that comparison could be made ...
