Introduction

Caffeine (1, 3, 7-trimethylxantheine) is a plant alkaloid found in coffee, tea, chocolates and colas. It is similar in structure to several endogenous metabolites, following absorption it crosses the blood-brain-barrier and is distributed in intracellular fluid (1). These properties allow caffeine to affect many human tissues including central nervous system (CNS), cardio-vascular system (CVS) and both smooth and skeletal muscles. Caffeine has the potential to influence human neuromuscular performance through its effect on the central and peripheral events along the motor pathway.
