CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION
Background of the Study
The study addresses the “Effectiveness of Anti psychotic drugs in dealing with challenging behavior among the older persons with dementia” as the use of anti psychotic drugs has been increased to great extent in treating the older persons with dementia. The topic of the study is of particular concern for the researchers because positive results have been shown in the older persons with dementia by the usage of these drugs.
The anti psychotic drugs have proved to be effective in treating Dementia and other disorders like Schizophrenia, Alzeihmer's etc. According to the research carried out by Banerjee (2009), in addressing the issue of healthcare quality, anti psychotic drugs are of particular interest since their use is widespread and inappropriate prescribing of these drugs is common (Banerjee, 2009, 191). There are two broad categories of anti psychotic drugs that are conventional antipsychotics and atypical antipsychotics drugs. The conventional antipsychotics are the drugs that are usually prescribed for treating the psychotic disorders. These antipsychotic drugs are usually used for relieving the symptoms of abnormal though, behavior, delusions, hallucinations etc. The conventional anti psychotic drugs were developed in the 1950s to treat schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders and they include drugs such as chloropromazine and haloperidol. Their pharmacological mechanism involves blocking dopamine receptors in the brain since abnormally high dopamine activity is associated with psychosis. While they are effective at treating psychotic disorders due to their anti-dopamineric properties, these conventional anti psychotic drugs also induce Parkinsonism, which is considered as a major adverse event. However there is another class of antipsychotic drugs that is used to control severe mental disorders. They are known as the atypical antipsychotic drugs that are quite different from conventional or typical antipsychotic drugs in their side effects. The atypical antipsychotic drugs prevent the individuals from the side effects of extra pyramidal, drug induced movement. The atypical anti psychotic drugs which were introduced in the 1990s were initially thought to be safer due to different receptor affinities. These drugs include clozapine, risperidone, olanzapine and quetiapinefumerate (Tremeau, 2006, ...
