The effective professional communication is an important element in the nurse patient relationship. It consists of various forms of communication including verbal, non verbal and affective. The verbal communication is determined through the written or spoken words, rate of tone and vocal pitch. The “affective” form of communication is based on the feeling tone, respect for space, emotion, mood and attitude. The last form of communication that is Nonverbal is based on the eye contact, postures, gestures, expression etc. All these forms of communication are imperative for our profession as they need to be in proper way so that the two way communication can be enabled and various challenges regarding our profession can be solved. Effective communication is also considered to be the only way through which our patients can get everything in the hospitals during their stay (Bystedt & Eriksson, 2011, 534). Communicating the progress of our patients to the doctors is an important step that we need to do in an effective manner and it is possible only through the effective professional communication (Swanson, 2009).
Critical Discussion
In our daily routine, we need to take proper care of the patients admitted to the Emergency Department (ED) along with the adequate and appropriate scheduling of the medicines being given to the patients. The regular check up is another important element in the daily routine of the Graduate Registered Nurses (GRN) (Sharpe, 2007). The effective professional communication is involved in all of these steps that need us to remain active for the whole day. However sometimes, communication becomes ineffective for us due to the usage of inadequate medium of communication (Borbasi, 2004). The technological barrier is one of the reasons of our ineffective communication process with our important patients that are completely dependent on us for their minor needs. The inadequate use of technology keeps us disturbed from our normal routine, making us project managers as compare to the caregivers (Calman, 2006).
