Abstract

This research paper is based on the effect of divorce on children. Divorce is a reality that makes a child detached from the social activities. In this research paper, there is a detailed focus of affects of divorce on the children life that brings short-term as well as long-term effects that makes a child's life, a disastrous life. The common effects in personality and life of a child discussed in this paper are; depression, anxiety, disloyal feelings, betrayal, etc.

Introduction

A divorce is a reality which affects on the children of all age groups. Sociologists and psychologist are researching on the effects of divorce on children for last many years and some of the important factors are considered which has a long-term effect on the children present life and future life. The effects vary from demographic factors to factors. The effect of divorce depend upon the age, gender, personality, support of family, support of friends, and extent of conflict between the parents. Divorce affects on the entire family and the whole family experiences a sudden change that alters the lifestyle of the family. It adversely affects on the lives of the children that make a child's life, a painful life and a child goes through a series of events that are intolerable for the child (Amato et al., 2004). Since 1970, the divorce rate has risen in United States. In history, it was argued that divorce does not affect on children and it is better for a child to live with one parent rather than living in a conflict and hassle environment. Some common facts related to divorce in United States are: before the age of 18, two to five children face divorce; the time is spent in step-family of around 25 percent children; the divorce in United States usually occur after seven years of marriage; after 1979, the rate of divorce decreased and now it is 11 percent less prior to 1979; in United States, approximately 1,250,000 divorces takes place; and each year, one million of the children are involved in divorce belonging to the age group of “under 18”.

Divorce affects on the children in an adverse way that brings abrupt changes in the behavior of children. A child who experiences divorce is said to be at risk. There are certain environmental factors as well as social factors that make it difficult for a child to make adjustment in his other lifestyle and such children faces hurdles in adapting the things quickly and properly. Comparative to other children, the children who face divorce are more likely to possess negative personality characteristics and traits (Leon, 2003).
